Used of a person who betrays anyone who trusts him or, more specifically, of a person who betrays his allegiance to his king or country.
The term occurs vocatively in ten of the Shakespearean plays in both of these senses. More modern instances occur in, e.g., A Cack-Handed War, by Edward Blishen, where a farmer calls a group of conscientious objectors ‘traitors’. They have refused to fight for their country on religious grounds. A more personal application lies behind ‘you damned traitor’, addressed to Professor Middleton, hero of Angus Wilson’s Anglo-Saxon Attitudes.
